The National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) has identified key warning signs Nigerians should look out for to prevent loss of lives and property from building collapses.
In a public safety advisory issued on its X page on Sunday, NEMA stressed that early detection of structural defects and immediate evacuation are among the most effective ways to prevent fatalities during building collapses.
Warning Signs to Watch For
According to NEMA, residents should be alert to the following signs:
- Cracks appearing on walls and floors
- Sagging or weakened roofs
- Persistent water leakage
- Doors and windows that suddenly become difficult to open or close
The agency advised residents who notice any of these signs to report the situation promptly to the relevant authorities and evacuate the building without delay.
How to Prevent Building Collapse
NEMA also urged Nigerians to take the following preventive measures:
- Build only with the necessary approvals
- Engage qualified professionals
- Use standard and quality building materials
- Avoid living in or using visibly dilapidated buildings
What to Do If Trapped in a Collapsing Building
NEMA advised anyone trapped in a collapsing structure to:
- Stay calm and avoid panic
- Protect your head from falling objects
- Do not use lifts
- Move away from the immediate danger zone if possible
- Call for help immediately
