Senator Rabiu Kwankwaso has called on former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar to withdraw from the 2027 presidential race, citing concerns over his age and health.
Kwankwaso, who is the vice-presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, made the call while receiving members of the Fulani Farmers Association at his residence in Abuja.
He urged the supporters of Atiku, the presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, to persuade him to reconsider his decision to contest the 2027 election.
According to Kwankwaso, Atiku should instead concentrate on his traditional responsibilities as the Wazirin Adamawa.
He said, “Go to the Wazirin of Adamawa’s house and tell him in Fulani that he needs to focus on his traditional title of Wazirin, given his age and health.”
Kwankwaso added that should his political camp emerge victorious, Atiku would be properly taken care of, particularly because of his connection to Adamawa State.
Atiku has been a presidential candidate on several occasions, including the 2007, 2011, 2019 and 2023 elections, but failed to secure victory in each contest.
Earlier in April, Atiku reportedly stated that the 2027 presidential election could be his final attempt at the presidency, taking into consideration his age and the significance of the contest.
He has continued to advocate for political restructuring, economic liberalisation and greater private-sector participation in Nigeria’s economic development.
