OYO STATE — Security forces have intensified operations in and around Igbeti, Olorunsogo Local Government Area of Oyo State, following an attack on a military camp on the outskirts of the town.
The development came barely 24 hours after the attack, as Oyo State Deputy Governor, Barrister Bayo Lawal, visited the affected area to assess the situation and meet with security personnel and local stakeholders.
The Deputy Governor, who was accompanied
the Commissioner for Information, Prince Dotun Oyelade, conveyed Governor Seyi Makinde’s assurance that the government would not abandon residents of the affected communities.
According to Lawal, the message from the governor to the people is clear: “You will never be abandoned.”
During an inspection of the scene led
the Commanding Officer of the 81 Battalion, Lt. Col. Innocent Asogwa, the Deputy Governor was informed that no fewer than 120 soldiers had been deployed into the surrounding bush to track down the attackers.
The military commander also explained that the fire which destroyed part of the facility and a vehicle was triggered during the attack. He said the terrorists used grenade launchers, which caused cooking gas cylinders within the premises to explode and worsen the fire.
Meanwhile, the state government disclosed that at least five suspects had been arrested in connection with the attack. The suspects were reportedly found wearing military uniforms, while security agencies are expected to make further arrests as investigations continue.
Surveillance Aircraft Deployed
The Deputy Governor also addressed concerns over aerial surveillance in the area, stating that the state government’s newly procured surveillance aircraft has been actively conducting random sorties as part of security and reconnaissance operations.
He explained that the aircraft cannot remain permanently in the sky but would remain available and ready to support security operations whenever required.
Lawal was joined at the scene
some local government chairmen and the Onigbeti of Igbeti.
He further announced the establishment of an emergency security committee comprising five adjoining local government areas — Olorunsogo, Oriire, Saki East, Orelope and Irepo.
The committee, he said, would immediately identify and provide the needs of security personnel operating in the affected areas while liaising with the state government to ensure prompt assistance.
“As a responsible government, we will continue to play our part in ensuring that our people are safe,” the Deputy Governor said.
The government also welcomed the report that no casualties were recorded during the attack.
Other officials who accompanied the Deputy Governor included the Commissioner for Establishment and Training, Prof. Saliu Adelabu, and the Senior Special Assistant on Security, CP Sunday Odukoya.
The statement was signed
Prince Dotun Oyelade, Commissioner for Information, Oyo State, on September 14, 2026.
