The administration of Governor Seyi Makinde of Oyo State has continued to demonstrate a strong commitment to the revival and development of sports, rekindling the state’s historic reputation as a major sporting centre in Nigeria.

Conscious of the rich sporting legacy of the old Western Region and the iconic infrastructure established decades ago, Governor Makinde has pursued the restoration of key sporting facilities that had suffered years of neglect.

One of the major highlights has been the massive renovation of the Lekan Salami Stadium Complex in Ibadan, which had deteriorated significantly after years of abandonment. The intervention has restored confidence in sporting activities across the state and provided a renewed platform for athletes and young talents.

Following the renovation of the major sporting facilities in Ibadan, local governments were encouraged to replicate the initiative. This contributed to the rehabilitation and development of sporting facilities across the 33 local government areas of Oyo State.

The renewed investment has also revitalised sporting activities in primary and secondary schools as well as tertiary institutions, creating opportunities for young people to discover and develop their talents in various sporting disciplines.

RESTORING OYO’S PLACE IN NATIONAL SPORTS

The renewed attention to sports has seen Oyo State return to active participation in national youth sports programmes and other major sporting events.

At the grassroots level, sporting activities have also received renewed attention, with competitions and leagues involving local government areas helping to identify and nurture emerging talents.

The revival of the state-owned Shooting Stars Sports Club of Ibadan has further strengthened Oyo’s sporting profile. After years of inactivity and financial difficulties, the club returned to competitive football, including participation in domestic and continental competitions.

Beyond sporting achievements, the renewed investment in sports has created opportunities for employment, wealth creation and increased economic activities. The sector has also provided a platform for young people to build careers while contributing to the state’s broader economic development.

SPORTS FACILITIES AS TOOLS FOR ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT

The Makinde administration has also continued to upgrade sports and youth development facilities across the state, with the objective of attracting private-sector participation, investors and sporting opportunities.

Sports remain an important instrument for promoting unity, discipline and social interaction at the local, national and international levels. In recognition of this, the administration has continued to support athletes, trainers and professionals across different sporting disciplines.

The transformation of the Liberty Stadium in Ibadan is another significant aspect of this renewed commitment. The once-neglected facility has undergone extensive rehabilitation, with substantial investment directed towards restoring its infrastructure and functionality.

The intervention has changed the narrative around the facility. What was previously associated with abandonment and the activities of criminal elements has become a vibrant centre for sports, recreation and physical fitness.

Today, people of different ages regularly visit the facility for exercise and other physical activities. Government agencies, private organisations and individuals also use the complex for sporting and fitness-related programmes.

A NEW ERA FOR SPORTS IN OYO

The transformation has therefore gone beyond the physical renovation of sporting facilities. It has restored the social and economic relevance of sports while providing residents with better opportunities to maintain healthy lifestyles.

With the achievements recorded in Oyo State through sustained investment in sports infrastructure, youth development and human capital, there is a strong case for similar reforms and investment at the national level.

Nigeria’s sports sector requires innovative policies, transparent administration, strategic investment and stronger collaboration with the private sector to unlock its enormous potential.

The experience in Oyo State under Governor Seyi Makinde demonstrates that with the right vision, sustained investment and effective management, neglected sporting facilities can be transformed into productive centres for talent development, employment, recreation and economic growth.
